Summer, school and all that jazz

It's been a rather different summer this year.   The past few years have been busy with kids visiting and running around to get them to their various activities from swim class to dance class and whatnot.  This year, with Jonah living with us during the school year, we spent most of the summer with just one kiddo underfoot.  Not that the house was any less noisy, but there was a little more elbow room.  Jessica has her hands full with her own little one now, so didn't visit this summer and Mitch stayed down there to look for a job.  Jonah spent most of the summer down in Utah with his Mom, but not before we popped him with a surprise.

Derek received a gift card from work for the Great Wolf Lodge (an indoor water park resort) earlier this year and we decided we would take Jonah and Juliana there after the school year finished, but before Jonah flew to his Mom's.  However, instead of telling them where we were going, we said we were heading south to Portland to visit with some friends.

When we got to the Centralia area, Derek and I talked about stopping some place for lunch and "wandered" the roads to find something suitable to eat.  Not seeing anything appealing on the streets, we pulled into a conveniently located hotel to "check out the restaurant there or ask the hotel desk for recommendations for food."  This hotel had some large wolf carvings out front, I might add.  Derek wandered the lobby with the kids while I talked with the front desk.

With a thick brochure in hand (with colored wristbands sticking out the top), I go back to the family and tell them we should try the restaurant at the hotel. Jonah is still oblivious and thinking this is merely a rest stop on the way to Portland.  At the restaurant, I tell them about this resort we stumbled into and all the features it has... it's an indoor water park and apparently guests at the hotel have full access to the water park, but they need to wear these wrist bands (while I am handing them out).

Jonah puts one on and goes back to staring at his phone, but not before asking "so when are we going to Portland?" "Um, Jonah... we're not going to Portland.  We're spending the weekend here. Surprise!"  At which point he proceeded to tell us how much we sucked and that he was never speaking to us again.  He would have been more convincing, had he managed to keep a grin off his face when he delivered those lines.

You think he would have learned by then.  Not two weeks earlier, we were driving home from somewhere when Derek takes a detour.  Jonah asked where we were going and Derek launches into a spiel about how we were thinking about changing cell phone carriers and going to a Verizon store to ask some questions.  Jonah starts to worry about having to change his phone (he loves his phone) and asking why we are doing this.  As we park the car in the lot of the Verizon store, Derek "changes his mind" and he detours into the Cold Stone Creamery next door (which was the destination the whole time).  If I recall correctly, he told us we sucked that time, too, and that he wasn't going to speak to us afterwards.  He wasn't about to pass up ice cream over a non-speaking issue.

In the middle of summer, Juliana and I attended a mini-family reunion on a Baltic Sea cruise.  Uncles, Aunts and cousins from the States, Hong Kong and Canada were there.  Juliana spent quite a bit of her time playing with her cousins and making use of the Kids Club aboard ship.  I almost didn't know what to do with myself with that alone time. I have so many pictures of Juliana and her cousin Jaden together, they were nigh inseperable and ran to give each other hugs whenever they met.

Towards the end of summer, Jonah returned and everything was all about Escape the Fate this and Escape the Fate that.  If you didn't know, Escape the Fate is a band and Jonah's favorite.  They're touring with the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival with a handful of bands, including two other bands that he likes. As it turns out, one of his friends from school had a birthday recently and her (yes, a GIRL) mom gave her a gift of concert tickets and permission to invite along two friends.  She picked Jonah and another female friend.  Being the dutiful parents we try to be, we talked with the Mom and eventually met her to talk through the details of the event and compare rules/expectations - no drugs, no smoking in the car, etc. So now he has our permission to attend this concert, so long as he keeps his grades up and his homework turned in on time.  Otherwise, he'll get this permission revoked.  He's doing great so far and the concert is in 2.5 weeks.

Luckily this year, Jonah seems to be enjoying his classes more than last year and doesn't find this term's teachers to be annoying.  One of his classes this term is acoustic guitar.  I may have to figure out a way to record him practicing...

Time... what is that?

*tap tap* Is this thing on? *tap tap*

LaOP: so you finally decided to stop by again...

IT: I stop by... I just haven't had much time to post things.

LaOP: So you say.  You know your Mom would be upset if you didn't talk with her weekly...

IT: Yes, yes, she would.  I just haven't figured out what to put on the blog.  Derek says I sometimes overthink myself into inaction.

LaOP: So stop thinking and start writing.

IT: The thing is... there are so many little things that happen that Facebook seems like a easier place to throw a blurb out than dedicating a blog post to "Juliana just called the back of her knees 'kneepits'."

LaOP: Facebook?!?! You know that half of your family and some of your closest friends don't go THERE, you really should keep me up to date, if not just for them.

IT:Alright, alright!! I'll upload some pictures tonight of some recent things that have been going on, but it will have to be after Juliana goes to bed.  I can't get any good typing done when she's awake.

LaOP: See you later.

IT: Later (I can't believe I'm talking with a blog...)

LaOP: I heard that.

I originally posted this as a note on my Facebook page on July 5th, as Blogger was inaccessible for me that morning and then forgot to move it over here.

So for all you readers who don't have a Facebook account (and you know who you are), another random conversation with Juliana:

----------------------------------------------------------

Today, on the way to Juliana's swim class, we had the following conversation in the car....

Juliana: I'm going to a different swim class today.
Me/Mom: you'll be going to the same class you went to last week.
J: But when I'm older, like when I'm 15, I'll get to take different classes.
M: That's right. If you are a strong swimmer, then maybe you can take diving classes or surfing classes...
J: or driving classes.
M: Yes, you might. (15.5 Yrs is the youngest in our state for getting a learner's permit)
J: And then I can get a truck.
M: You want a truck?
J: Well, I just want a big car. It will be pink.
M: A PINK truck?
J: Dark pink... with a little black.
M: DARK pink with a little black?
J: And a little white... and a plus sign.
M: A plus sign?
J: Yes, because I want people to know I am a doctor. And I'll have a hospital and an ambulance, too.

Apparently she wants to be the next Doogie Houser.  Even if she doesn't know who that is.

Conversations to remember

Conversation #1  (a.k.a. Instructions for Staying Healthy)

A few weeks ago, Juliana started getting the sniffles and was concerned about catching a cold.

Juliana: Momma, can you tell me how to stay healthy?

Mom: Well, first off, you need to dri...

J: No... I need you to write down the 'structions.

M: The instructions?

J: Yes (pointing to some paper on the table).

M: Alright.  (writing as I speak)  First, you need to drink a lot of water.
Second, you need to get a lot of rest and sleep
Third, Listen to what your Mommy and Daddy say...

(Jonah walks through the room at this point)
Jonah (JT):... And Jonah!  Listen to Jonah, too! And be Awesome!

J: And cool!  Be cool and awesome!

So, to recap...

1) Drink a lot of water
2) Get a lot of rest and sleep
3) Listen to Mommy and Daddy (and Jonah)
4) Be cool and awesome

Conversation #2

Juliana has a very active imagination and loves to pretend.  One of her favorite things is to turn her bedroom into a restaurant where she stands on her bed and takes your order.  Last week, she decided it would be "Juliana's McDonald's".

Juliana: Juliana's McDonald's Restaurant is now open!  Who is my next customer?

Mom (walking into the room): Can I have an apple pie?

J: No, you need to eat something healthy first.

M:  Hmm... you're right.  I'll have a salad.

J: Okay, here you go.  (louder) Who is my next customer?

Dad: (from other room) Hold on, I'm a little busy.

M: Daddy will have a Filet-o-Fish sandwich.

J: Sorry.  All out.

M: (louder) Daddy! I tried ordering you a Filet-o-Fish, but they're all out.

D: Do you have any fried mackerel?

J: Yes, but only five. How many do you want?

D: I'll take all five.

J: No, just one each.

D: Well, if I can only have one, then I want anchovies on top.

J: Sorry, we are all out of anchovies.

D: Do you have any day-old shrimp?

J: Yep.

D: I'll have that, then.

What does your McDonald's serve?  I bet it doesn't have fried mackerel and day-old shrimp.

This little one cracks me up...

Some random bits of conversation with Juliana...

(On the phone with Mitch, talking about playing soccer)
Juliana: Yeah, running... that's my favorite exercise!

(On the stairs as we are getting ready to go out)
Juliana:  Mom, you look regular today.
     Me: Regular?
Juliana: Yeah!  No glasses.  (I was wearing contacts that day)

Hmmm.... I just realized I might need to encourage her to say "yes" more instead of "yeah".

Now I would like to share with you one of Juliana's latest projects from school.

Some background: Her preschool has a different topic each month (one month was plants and leaves, last month was geography and travel).  This month the topic is the body and one of the projects last week was to lie down and have your outline traced and then the kids colored in their own outlines.

I'll show you the whole thing and then break down what Juliana told me about the project...

(Sorry.  Given the lighting in here today, this is the best overall picture I could take)

These are her toes

The blue area is her stomach and the black area is her body

And now the best part of the drawing...

That odd shaped growth out of the top of her head was the ponytail that her hair was in at the beginning of the school day (it was out by the time I picked her up after school)

I thought the black suns on the head were her eyes, but she corrected me in stating that those were her eyebrows

The blue lines are her talking.  It seems that she realizes that she is a talker...  I asked her teacher about this and she said Juliana is a "great communicator"

Random thing I want to remember #25398...

Lately when Juliana and I are playing, I sometimes pretend to nibble at her.  Whenever this happens, she tells me (in no uncertain terms): "I am not a snack! I'm a person... and that's a LOT!"

Which makes me smile and giggle and want to nibble some more...

Special Recipe from Juliana

So yesterday, Juliana handed me a notebook and asked me to write down the ingredients for a cake as she dictated/worked with the ingredients...

Juliana's Special Cake #4  (yes, this is the 4th cake she's had me write down, but the others weren't as entertaining - directions are observations from her actions/words)

10 Chicken
10 Ketchup
10 Mustard
Cake Batter

Mix 5 each of the chicken, ketchup and mustard with the cake batter
Add graham crackers (a LOT)
Top with ranch dressing
Use strawberries (6) to garnish
Use remaining chicken, ketchup and mustard for decoration

Enjoy!

disclaimer:  because her directions excluded any actual baking/cooking, please do not use raw chicken for this recipe if you intend on actually eating any part of it.
